What this place is

Most bakeries pick a side. This one puts a braided challah on the same shelf as a tray of conchas, and has done for as long as anyone on Raymond Way can remember.

Our story

He learned challah in a Jewish bakery, then made it his own.

This shop started life as a Jewish bakery. Efren, who is Mexican, apprenticed here and learned to braid and bake authentic challah the way it had always been done on this counter.

When the shop became his, he kept every bit of it. The challah stayed. So did the rugelach-era habits of a proper bread bakery. Then he added the panaderia he grew up with, and the conchas, orejas and tres leches moved in alongside.

It is run by Efren and his wife, and it is still a family business. That crossover is not a marketing idea. It is just what happens when somebody learns a trade properly and then brings their own home to it.

On the counter

What comes out of the ovens.

The cases are restocked through the day, so what is out depends on when you come in. This is the range you can expect to find.

Conchas from Efren's Bakery, sugar tops scored in the shell pattern
01

Pan Dulce

Conchas with their shell tops scored by hand, orejas folded and caramelised until the edges shatter, sesame rolls and sugar-dusted pastries. The everyday bread of a Mexican panaderia, out early.

Challah and Breads

Challah, braided and glazed, learned in a Jewish bakery and still baked here. Soft rolls and loaves sit on the same counter as the pan dulce, which is the whole point of this place.

Pastries and Cookies

Cream puffs, eclairs, jelly rolls and black and white cookies. Decorated sugar cookies come out in whatever the season calls for, from hearts to emoji faces.

Pies

Cherry and apple under a lattice crust, and pumpkin when the weather turns. Baked in the shop and set out on the rack in tins.

Tres Leches

The cake people come in asking for by name, soaked and topped with cream and fruit. Ask at the counter for what is set out that day.

Strawberry Tarts

Whole strawberries glazed to a shine, set on pastry cream in a short pastry shell. They go out on the platter and they do not last.

Custom cakes

Bring in the idea. They will build it.

Birthdays, weddings, quinceaneras, baby showers. The board behind the counter is covered in what has already been made here, from character cakes to tiered white icing.

Come in or call to talk it through. The more notice you can give, the more the design can be worked out properly with you.

“Had a pretty large order for my daughter's wedding. They were very helpful and friendly when ordering. Bakery items were delicious and fresh and a very large variety to choose from. They sent us home with the most delicious bread, and when I returned to pay the remainder of the bill they sent me off with cookies.”
